Dr Michael S Loughnan
M.B.B.S. (Hons) Ph.D., F.R.A.N.Z.C.O.

Dr Michael Loughnan is an ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the front of the eye including: Cataract, Corneal Graft and Pterygium Surgery.

He graduated from Monash University in 1983 with honours, gaining high distinctions in both medicine and surgery and receiving the Prince Henry’s Hospital Senior Medical Staff award for the top graduating student.

He completed a doctorate at Melbourne University studying under Professor Sir Gustav Nossal and went on to complete training in ophthalmology at both Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

 

In 1992 and 1993, he traveled to Boston, USA to undertake fellowship training in both laser surgery and diseases of the front of the eye at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard University.

In 1994, he returned to Melbourne University Department of Ophthalmology as a Senior Research Fellow. He is currently a Senior Staff Specialist on the Corneal Clinic and the Chairman of the Senior Medical Staff at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

He is an author of a recently internationally published textbook on diseases of the front of the eye and has published over 25 scientific papers.
